Case Studies / Niigata City Enhances Weather Livestreams with CamOverlay App and Picture-in-Picture
15 Jul 2023 - 19:07
A weather livestream powered by CamStreamer App and CamOverlay App helps Niigata City provide residents and visitors with a comprehensive real-time view of weather conditions by combining multiple camera angles, live weather information, and dynamic graphics in a single broadcast.
Located on the west coast of Honshu, Niigata City wanted to provide residents and visitors with a reliable and easy-to-use weather information service. To achieve this, the city partnered with Comworks Co., Ltd., a CamStreamer partner in Japan, to develop a cost-effective livestreaming solution capable of operating continuously without requiring additional streaming hardware.
The city's main requirements were to create a 24/7 weather livestream that accurately reflects current conditions, streams directly to YouTube, and provides viewers with more than a single camera perspective. At the same time, the solution needed to remain simple to operate while delivering clear and informative weather updates for both residents and visitors.
The solution, designed and implemented by Comworks Co., Ltd., is built around an AXIS P1448-LE Network Camera running CamStreamer App and CamOverlay App directly inside the camera. By processing the livestream onboard the camera, the system delivers continuous 4K video directly to YouTube without requiring an external computer or streaming software. Background music stored locally on the camera further enhances the viewing experience.
To provide a complete overview of the weather situation, CamOverlay App adds dynamic graphic overlays directly into the livestream. These include a live weather widget powered by AccuWeather, an information ticker displaying important updates, and a picture-in-picture layout combining live video from two additional AXIS P1445-LE Network Cameras. Together, the three camera views give viewers a comprehensive perspective of weather conditions across the city.
To ensure clear communication with local audiences, the information ticker was customized using a dedicated font supporting Japanese characters, allowing all displayed information to appear correctly throughout the broadcast.
The resulting 24-hour livestream provides residents and visitors with an accurate overview of Niigata City's weather from three different viewpoints, complemented by real-time weather information and calming background music. The solution fully met the city's requirements for a reliable, easy-to-manage weather information service while eliminating the need for external streaming hardware.
"We are very satisfied. CamStreamer App and CamOverlay App met our expectations and the solution was implemented without any problems as the technical follow-up of Comworks is good."
– Official statement from Niigata City Government, translated by Christopher Aghedo, Comworks Co., Ltd.
Beyond providing accurate weather information, the project demonstrates how multiple camera views, live weather data, and dynamic graphic overlays can be combined into a single automated livestream that keeps viewers engaged while delivering valuable public information.
