Case Studies / City-Wide Live Traffic Streaming Solution for TOYA
30 Dec 2023 - 10:12
A city-wide video streaming solution powered by CamStreamer App enables TOYA to deliver live traffic information across television, mobile applications, and web platforms while providing residents with real-time insights into road conditions.
TOYA is one of the largest cable television operators in Poland, providing digital television, internet, and telephone services to more than 170,000 households. Since its establishment, the company has focused on innovative technologies that improve access to information and digital services for local communities.
One of TOYA's key objectives was to provide residents with live traffic information from major intersections and critical roads across several Polish cities, including Łódź, Piotrków Trybunalski, Przemyśl, Pabianice, Mysłowice, and Kutno. Following the success of the initial deployment, the company planned to expand the project to additional cities, including Kraków and Kołobrzeg.
The solution needed to deliver broadcast-quality video for television services while simultaneously making live traffic streams available through mobile applications, websites, dedicated TV applications, and TOYA GO. At the same time, the system had to remain scalable, reliable, and easy to integrate with TOYA's existing infrastructure, while making the service available not only to TOYA subscribers but also to the wider public.
"We'd been looking for solutions that would ensure quality video streaming for TV services. We had no doubt about the choice of cameras – Axis Communications cameras equipped with the CamStreamer App were the only ones that fully answered our needs, and their integration with the existing system ran smoothly thanks to TOYA's internal R&D department."
The project was built around AXIS P1425-E, AXIS P1425-LE, and AXIS M1145 Network Cameras, selected for their excellent image quality, weather resistance, and long-term reliability in demanding outdoor environments.
Each camera runs CamStreamer App, which was selected because of its ability to generate an MPEG-TS video stream that complies with long-established television broadcasting standards. This enabled TOYA to deliver broadcast-quality video directly from the cameras while simplifying integration with its existing television infrastructure.
The complete camera management and distribution system was developed by TOYA's internal R&D department. The platform aggregates camera streams, distributes video to the appropriate CDN nodes, supervises every connected camera, and automatically alerts the technical team whenever communication issues occur.
A total of 57 AXIS cameras were installed across six cities. Because all cameras operate outdoors, the selected models were chosen for their durability and ability to perform reliably in changing weather conditions while consistently delivering HDTV 1080p video quality.
The solution was designed with future expansion in mind. Thanks to the compatibility of AXIS Network Cameras with ONVIF standards and a wide range of video management systems, additional cameras can be integrated easily without overloading the existing infrastructure or requiring major system modifications.
The completed solution enables TOYA to deliver high-quality live traffic information simultaneously across television services, TOYA GO, dedicated applications for iOS and Android, desktop computers (PC and macOS), and dedicated TV applications developed by TOYA's R&D department.
Residents now have immediate access to current traffic conditions at major intersections, helping them make better travel decisions while increasing the availability of important local information. TOYA subscribers can also display internet-based traffic streams directly on their television screens, extending traditional TV services with live online content.
By generating MPEG-TS streams directly within the cameras, the solution eliminates the need for high-performance transcoding hardware while reducing operational complexity and deployment costs. Combined with CamStreamer App, the system provides a reliable and scalable streaming infrastructure that can continue expanding as new cities and camera locations are added.
Following the successful deployment and positive response from local residents, TOYA has continued extending the solution to additional cities, demonstrating the flexibility and long-term scalability of the platform.
