USSSA uses CamStreamer apps onboard Axis cameras for baseball game streaming

The SportTracker App, in combination with Axis ARTPEC 8 DLPU cameras, provides automated camera switching based on the game action.

About the project

The USSSA (United States Specialty Sports Association) is a sports governing body and multi-sport association. To reach a wider audience, USSSA was looking for a high-quality live streaming solution with an easy setup.

Technical solution

We provided the client with our multi-camera solution: one camera faces the field (including the pitcher) and another focuses on the batter for close-up shots. The field-facing camera is equipped with the SportTracker App, an AI-powered part of our Sports Solution, which detects the pitch and automatically switches between views.

While most fields use a two-camera setup (field view and batter view), we implemented a three-camera solution on one specific field. For the SportTracker App to function correctly, the camera must face the field directly. Typically, we stream the match primarily from this camera; however, in this instance, the view was partially blocked by the cheering audience.

To solve this, the SportTracker App (installed on an AXIS P3265-LV) handles pitch detection without issues, while the actual live stream of the match is broadcast from an AXIS P3268-LVE located on the side of the field via the CamStreamer App. The batter’s view is captured by an AXIS Q1798-LE.

To enhance the viewer experience, USSSA also includes live scoreboard information. This data is pulled by our free script available on GitHub, which fetches an HTML page, converts it to a PNG image, and pushes it to the selected cameras. The CamOverlay App then inserts these scores into the live stream.

The Result

USSSA currently uses our solution to cover five of its fields. The game streams now run without any need for manual intervention—they broadcast live, switch automatically upon pitch detection, and feature fully integrated dynamic scoreboards.
